Get off at the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Bahnhof (Garmisch-Partenkirchen Station) and head to the nearby bus terminal, which is located just outside the train station. The bus stations can be easily recognized with a big green H which stands for “Haltestelle” – stopping point.

Look for bus number 3 or 4, and get off at the Eibsee bus stop, which is near the lake. The bus ride to Eibsee takes approximately 20 minutes.

 

Munich to Eibsee: Using Train and Cogwheel Train

In addition to the bus option, you also have the choice of taking a cogwheel train to reach Eibsee. This picturesque route (especially in winter) is known for its breathtaking beauty, which is why many people prefer it.

Upon arriving at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, make your way to the cogwheel train (Zahnradbahn) station, located nearby.

Purchase a ticket for the cogwheel train and board the train heading to Eibsee. The journey from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to Eibsee by cogwheel train takes approximately 30 minutes.

Bus Line 3 (Zugspitzebahn) and Bus Line 4 (Eibsee) from Garmisch-Partenkirchen train station to Eibsee are covered by the Bayern Ticket, so you won’t need an additional ticket.

Please note: Alternatively, if the cogwheel train (Zahnradbahn) to Eibsee is in operation and you prefer that mode of transportation, you’ll need to purchase a separate ticket for the cogwheel train. The Bayern Ticket covers the train journey from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and the cogwheel train ride till Grainau. But the cogwheel train between Grainau and Eibsee is an additional service.

If you are on a super tight budget and do not want to pay extra for the cogwheel train, then there is a beautiful solution for you.
